Discover Åland words and expressions

The people of Åland speak Swedish, but also use several words and expressions that are typical of Åland. Here we have gathered some of the dialectal words and expressions used in Åland, also called Ålänska. The words may also be found in Swedish-speaking Finland.

Baksomfram = back to front, the wrong way

Batteri = radiator

Bergknuv = rounded hilltop

Blystra = 1. to whistle | 2. the wind howls/whines

Blånna = bruise, bruising

Byka = to wash clothes 

Bykmaskin = washing machine

Byrång/Birång = dresser, storage furniture

Gå till byss = to go or visit someone in the village/neighbourhood

Bändig = stubborn, sulky, difficult

Bölla = wasp's nest

Dorva = to hit with force

Durak = fool

Egnahemshus = detached house

Falla av skaft = to completely lose one's train of thought

Fastlagsbulle = pastry equivalent to the Swedish semla

Fem före = very close to an event

Gaplapp = a person who is loud (derogatory)

Grom = coffee grounds

Gruva sig = to whine, to complain

Har du kallt? = Are you cold?

Haska = to waste

Hårt = fast

Jag ids inga [ja iss inga] = I can't be bothered to, I don't care to

Ids inga [iss inga] = don't bother

Ilväder = storm

Int/Inga = not

Jåla = to talk nonsense, to fool around

Jålig = silly

Jålvant = someone who fools around or acts silly

Klotta = to spill, to make a mess

Krappis/Krapula = hangover

Kruxa för/i = to tick off, to check

Lilla jul = first Sunday of Advent

Nojs / nojsig = noise, trouble, nagging

Nojsa = to nag, to quarrel

Nåsså då = oh my! well I never!

Pallra = to talk nonsense, to do unnecessary things

Pallervant = a silly or ridiculous, timid person

Platt lugnt = at sea: completely calm, windless

På hälft = half-done

På skrot = something went wrong

Reppa = 1. to scratch, to tear | 2. to pluck a bird

Ricklig = unsteady

Rådda = to mess up, to create disorder

Semla = bread/sandwich equivalent to the Swedish bread roll

Siddu = you see, there you go

Sjöberg = personification of the sea

Skena = to run

Skribba = confirmation classes

Skrinna = 1. to ice skate | 2. to glide

Skämma bort = spoiled

Talka = collective voluntary work

Tryna = to snoop, to be nosy

Tövla = to fumble, to act clumsily

Ut som in = inside out, reversed

Vilig = good, excellent, proper

Yttermed = outside
