During the summer and early autumn, exciting and fast-paced races are also held at Ålandstravet in Jomala, with visits from both professional and amateur trainers from Sweden and Finland.

In Mariehamn there are two sailing clubs, ÅSS and MSF, which run active membership activities for both sailing and motorboat enthusiasts. Both clubs also offer great opportunities for children and young people who want to develop their skills.

In winter, there are ski trails with artificial snow at Åland's biathlon centre in Jomala for those who enjoy cross-country skiing, while Germundö Alpin offers slopes for downhill skiing.

On water and ice, kayaking, kitesurfing and long-distance ice skating are popular activities. In the inner bays, the ice forms early and remains well into spring. A uniquely relaxing nature experience like no other.

Nature and outdoor life

The archipelago nature offers fantastic scenery and contrasts. The red granite rocks against the snow in winter, an explosion of flowers in spring, summer's white sails on blue inlets, or lush greenery and the autumn's fireworks of green, yellow and red.

The surrounding sea preserves the summer warmth so that it lasts well into autumn. The opportunities for berry and mushroom picking, hiking and exciting excursions are endless. All around Åland there are many beautiful nature trails and hiking paths.

The people of Åland love to spend time by and on the water. Most have their own boat, sometimes two or three. The water is close wherever you live, but it would likely take more than a lifetime to discover all the bays, beaches and uninhabited islands of the archipelago.

In Åland, essentially the same rules apply for the right to roam as in the rest of the Nordic countries, with a few exceptions. For all fishing except angling, you should have a fishing permit.

A rich cultural life

Culture thrives in Åland. There is a wide range of offerings for both interested audiences and all active participants.
Åland's cultural life is largely sustained by associations, while the responsibility for the community's cultural efforts is shared between the regional government and the municipalities.

Several music events, concerts and festivals take place every year. These can range from organ festivals to rock concerts. Even though the offering is greatest during the tourist season, music can be heard year-round. Among other places, at the culture and congress centre Alandica in Mariehamn.

There is a wide selection of museums, from small farm museums around the countryside to the Åland Museum of Cultural History and the Åland Art Museum in Mariehamn. Also in Mariehamn is the world-famous Åland Maritime Museum, which tells much about how prosperity was built up in the early 1900s.

Art is generally important to the people of Åland, and there are several galleries and many active artists who are happy to welcome visitors to their studios.

Theatre is performed regularly. Amateur theatre is vibrant with many enthusiasts. In summer, theatre associations put on several historical plays and outdoor theatre performances.

Events and entertainment

Is there an Åland nightlife in winter? Absolutely! It's naturally not as intense as in mid-July, but still far more lively than in many other places of comparable size.

When day turns to evening, there is entertainment for everyone, well into the early hours. In Mariehamn, bars, pubs and nightclubs are never far apart. In the city centre, there are dance floors for every taste. It's always just a short walk to the next place, so you can easily try them out until you find your favourite.

You can also watch theatre, shows and concerts, or visit one of the excellent restaurants. In summer, the outdoor scene rivals that of a major city, with a wealth of music and entertainment events.
