Åland's Health and Medical Care (ÅHS) is responsible for public health and medical care in Åland.
When you visit a doctor or nurse, you pay a fee. If you become ill, you should first call a health center or health and medical care clinic. The permanent residents in the archipelago municipalities can, if necessary, use a helicopter to quickly get to hospital care.
There is both public and private dental care. Public dental care can be used by children and young people up to the year they turn 28. For adults, there are several private dental clinics to choose from.
In life-threatening situations, for example in the case of serious acute accidents, major bleeding, severe chest pain, sudden breathing difficulties, unconsciousness, paralysis symptoms or seizures, call the emergency number 112 or go directly to the emergency room.
What happens then?The symptoms are assessed by a nurse at the healthcare information line and you can receive help with advice, an appointment at the on-call clinic, or referral to another authority if needed.

ÅHS and public healthcare
While working in Åland, you are entitled to health and medical care services here. In addition to the public healthcare within ÅHS, there are private medical practices. Employers are often responsible for healthcare and occupational health services for their employees.
If you become ill, you can apply for financial support and support to maintain and improve your work ability from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).
In Åland there are several private medical and dental clinics, physiotherapists and chiropractors.
Finland has a social security system that functions as a safety net and gives you, as someone living or working in the country, the right to social benefits and public services. For example, public health care, social services, education, employment pension, income security, family benefits, parental allowances, and more.
