Kaii Luong Atung

For me, it's a once in a lifetime chance!

Kaii Luong Atung, born in Vietnam but raised in the Netherlands, is currently studying Swedish for immigrants in Åland.
- I found my way to Åland through my gaming friends!

For Kaii Luong Atung, team-based online games are a major interest. By playing League of Legends online, he has made friends all over the world.

- When I had some free time after university, I decided to travel around and visit friends I had met through the game. First I went to Germany, then on to Canada – and after a very long journey by both plane and ferry, I eventually ended up in Åland.

New surroundings

The first visit lasted two weeks, but Kaii enjoyed himself so much that he chose to come back.

- It's so quiet here! In the Netherlands, I lived in the city with a lot of noise, but in Åland it's very peaceful and safe. I also like how varied the environment is, with mountains, forests, water – in the Netherlands it's very flat.

Already during the first two weeks in Åland, he received an offer of temporary work at the bakery Choklad.
- And now I'm here!

Swedish full-time

The opportunity to learn Swedish at Medis came up when Kaii had been living in Åland for six months and was able to register as a job seeker at the Employment and Study Service Agency (Ams).
- I wanted to challenge myself and saw it as a once in a lifetime chance and an opportunity to start over. So now I'm studying Swedish full-time from Monday to Friday for ten months.

Kaii already speaks German, Dutch, Vietnamese and English. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Communication and Media Studies, and has previously worked as a Website Manager and User Centered Designer. It was therefore a perfect fit for him to do his three-week language internship at a web agency in Mariehamn.

First-time experiences

Apart from studying Swedish, his plans for the future are still unclear, but he enjoys life in Åland and wants to stay.
- After the Medis course, I'll look for a job, or maybe start my own business. Right now I'm renting a house in Finström from a friend.

Life in Åland is calm. When Kaii isn't at the gym, he spends a lot of time with his Ålandic gaming friends. Nowadays it's the friends back home in the Netherlands that he meets online. It's only occasionally that unexpected moments of excitement arise.

- When you're driving in the dark, deer can appear on the road! And in winter, the roads can get surprisingly slippery.
