As a parent, you're protected by strong legislation that helps you balance work and family life:
Right to leave: You're entitled to take leave from work during pregnancy and parental leave, without risking your employment.
Childcare leave: After parental leave ends, you're entitled to unpaid childcare leave to care for your child at home until they turn three.
Temporary childcare leave: If your child under 10 falls ill, you're entitled to short-term leave (usually 1–4 days) to care for them.
Partial childcare leave: You have the option to reduce your working hours until your child has completed their first two years of comprehensive school.
The Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) distributes a maternity package with baby clothes and other necessary accessories as a benefit to all expectant mothers in Finland and Åland.
Child benefit is paid by FPA for children living in Åland. Child benefit is paid until the age of 17. The amount of the benefit is graded according to the number of children in the family.
When parental allowance ends, you may be granted home care allowance from your home municipality until the child turns three years old. A prerequisite for receiving home care allowance is that the child does not have child care that is arranged or funded by the municipality.
