Kristine originally comes from Latvia. When the country was hit by the global financial crisis in 2012, her husband found work in Åland, and after a few months she chose to follow.– It wasn't an easy decision, but it turned out to be the right one.
It was the closeness to nature that made the strongest impression when Kristine first came to Åland.
– The cliffs, the sea and the tranquility. I have always dreamed of living close to the sea, and here it felt as though that dream became reality.
The encounter with the people of Åland also contributed to the feeling of having come to the right place.
– I was met by friendly and kind people, which made me quickly feel welcome.
What Kristine appreciates most about life in Åland is the sense of security and closeness in everyday life. When her first child was born here, it became clear how much the small-scale environment means.
– Schools, childcare, leisure activities and work are all close by. It creates a quality of life that is hard to find in many other places.
The combination of security and simplicity in everyday life is something she is keen to highlight.
– I usually call Åland a paradise for families – peaceful, safe and beautiful.
After 13 years in Åland, the decision to stay has become a matter of course.
– Åland has become my home. Here is our house, our everyday life and everything we have built up over the years. This is where I want to see my children grow up.
She also highlights the opportunities she has gained through the move, such as free studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Åland and the chance to get involved in local politics.
– Åland has opened doors for me that would likely have been closed if we had stayed in Latvia.
Kristine's advice to anyone considering moving to Åland is to dare to take the step.
– Come and experience the small-scale life, the magnificent nature and the rich cultural offerings. For me, Åland is the place where I found security, quality of life and a home for my family.
