Johanna Holmström i Sjökvarteret i Mariehamn.

It's an awesome combo and a great balance in life!

From her home office in Åland, Johanna Holmström, HR Manager Nordic and Sustainability Champion, is responsible for 85 employees across HellermannTyton AB's five offices in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Johanna Holmström

- I really love this combination – living this close to the sea and yet just a digital meeting away from the global world and my colleagues there.

Johanna thrives at HellermannTyton and appreciates that it is a company with both global and local operations and a strong dose of entrepreneurship, innovation and a close-knit team spirit.

- There is an autonomy that I greatly appreciate! If you take responsibility and work hard, there are many opportunities to grow. Here, our strongest resource is the staff – they are the ones who create HellermannTyton!

Personnel responsibility

Before Johanna began her HR career, she worked as a nurse in pediatric care, including at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. She then decided to pursue further studies. First a bachelor's degree in human resources, work, organization and economics at Stockholm University, followed by a master's degree in economics in leadership, organization and society at Stockholm Business School at Stockholm University.

Her studies led to a position at HellermannTyton AB.
- I had only worked there for a month before the pandemic hit. Since I needed to work from home anyway, I chose to do so from Åland, where my partner and family are.

The solution worked so smoothly that Johanna chose to continue working remotely even after the pandemic.
- It helps that my position was new when I started. I have been part of building up the HR function at the company, and it has been enjoyable to develop my role over these years.

In addition to working broadly with HR across all areas where HR contributes to the company's business, Johanna is a member of HellermannTyton's management team.

- I am also Sustainability Champion for Sweden, Finland and Denmark, which means I am responsible for the company's Nordic sustainability report and our work on our sustainability strategy. We are a group of four people that I project manage for the sustainability report and our CSRD reporting.

A smooth solution

Johanna is now affiliated with HellermannTyton in Finland, which handles salary payments, social contributions, taxes and holiday compensation.
- By being able to transfer to the Finnish company, it was straightforward for me to move from Sweden to Finland.

For others who are interested in living in Åland without losing their employment in another country, she recommends starting by simply asking the question.
- Work from everywhere is becoming increasingly common, so find out what opportunities are available with your employer!

Remote work

Of course, working remotely can be challenging. It requires a great deal of discipline, and it is easy to miss your colleagues. Johanna alternates between her home office and renting a room at the business hotel Blomstringe seven days a month. She also participates in Åland HR networks and breakfast meetings arranged by Ålands Näringsliv.

Three days every third week are travel days. She travels around visiting employees at the company's five offices across the Nordic region.
- Our Nordic employees are spread across four countries, so it doesn't really matter whether I sit in Åland or at the head office in Kista – I meet them just as much either way. Instead, there are many digital meetings, and I work activity-based during my travel days. That's when I have in-person meetings where I walk around and talk with my colleagues.

In HR, all work happens in communication and collaboration with managers. A large part of working hours also involves supporting managers.

- It is part of my role to have regular coaching conversations with managers. Not least in the employee lifecycle, which includes employer branding, recruitment, onboarding, skills development, performance reviews and offboarding.

Quality of life

The workload and pace are high, but Johanna is used to it and finds it worthwhile when she gets to be at home in Åland at the same time.

- It's an amazing combination and a great work-life balance! I don't have to give anything up – I get to work globally and live here, where it's safe, close to everything and full of possibilities!
