Kristian originally comes from the Philippines. His path to Åland went through Finland, where he studied to become a chef in Vaasa for three years. About two years ago, he moved on to Åland – first for his work placement and then for employment.– After the placement, I was offered a permanent position, so I moved back straight after finishing my studies.
When Kristian first came to Åland, he found the community very quiet, almost a little too peaceful. Over time, that sense of calm has taken on a different meaning.
– There isn't the same buzz here as in Stockholm or Helsinki, but the community is still lively and functions independently.
Nowadays, Kristian thinks the best thing about living in Åland is the quality of life and the slower pace of living.
– The balance between work and leisure isn't just something people say, it's a real part of everyday life – not something you save for weekends or holidays.
The sea is always close by and it's easy to get out into nature, whether it's a bike ride or having a cup of coffee outdoors. Summer is something truly special.
– The light nights feel almost unreal, like a reward after the winter.
For Kristian, diversity is also one of the advantages of Åland.
– Despite Åland being small, people from many different backgrounds live here. You learn a great deal from other cultures while also getting to contribute something of your own.
Staying in Åland feels natural.
– It's a safe place to put down roots and start a family. Despite different backgrounds, there is a strong sense of community, and people genuinely care about one another.
He recommends the island life of Åland to anyone who values peace, a balance between work and leisure, and a strong sense of community.
– Åland is my home, far from home.
