We are happy and grateful to be able to live here

Johanna and Tobias both come from Germany and have lived in Åland for just over four years. Together they run the company Ålands Karamelleriet.

For Johanna, Åland has been part of her life for a long time. Her family has vacationed here every summer since the 1960s, ever since her father was young. As a child, she spent a lot of time on the shores of Lumparn, picked blueberries and learned to fish from her father.

Since Tobias became part of the family, he too has joined them and spent a great deal of time in Åland.

A joint decision

Even before the move, Johanna and Tobias had decided that at some point in their lives they would live in Åland for an extended period. When the idea of starting Ålands Karamelleriet took shape, the decision became concrete.

– We wanted to continue with the craft we learned at Johanna's parents' candy shop in Bremen.

With the help of her parents and the Ålandic family friends Gunilla and Roger, the couple moved to Åland in the spring of 2021 to realize their plans. Starting their own business in Åland felt easy and straightforward, with far less bureaucracy than in Germany.

– The first impression was that the people of Åland are very welcoming and curious, and generally open to ideas.

Nature and people

What Johanna and Tobias appreciate most about life in Åland is the openness of the people, both those who were born here and those who have moved here.

– In the short time we have lived here, we have made many close friends. People we would otherwise never have met.

Nature is another important part of everyday life.

– It never ceases to surprise with forests, cliffs, islands and sea. There is always something new to discover.

Dare to take the step

When the couple describes Åland to those who have not yet been here, they highlight the tranquility, the closeness to nature and the friendliness.

– Life feels simpler and less stressful than in Germany.

Their advice to others who are curious about Åland is to be bold. They also suggest making use of the resources available.

– Whether you already have a job, are looking for a job, or want to start your own business, it is worth it. The Åland Regional Government, Åland Living, Aland.com and other organizations are a great source of support.

For Johanna and Tobias, staying in Åland is now a matter of course.

– We have chosen Åland as our home and do not regret it for a second.

– Åland, you wonderful land of thousands of islands and islets. We are happy and grateful to be able to live here!
