Joel comes from Nykarleby in Finland. He moved to Åland in 2009 to study at the University of Applied Sciences on Åland and then chose to stay. What he particularly appreciates about life on Åland is the combination of entrepreneurial spirit and community spirit.
– There is a will to create, but also to help one another. Together, it becomes a winning combination.

He describes Åland as a place where ideas are given room and where commitment is often met with support.

– Here you can help out, create or build something while also finding peace – often on the same day and in different environments.

The sea around the corner

When Joel describes Åland to friends and family outside the islands, it is often the proximity to the sea that comes first. For him personally, however, it was the granite-red roads that made the very first impression.

– It is a fantastic place where the sea is right outside the door.

Over time, Åland has become more than just a place to live. Here there is also balance in a rewarding everyday life.

– Åland has given me so much, and I also want to give back. I enjoy the tranquility, the proximity to the sea and the opportunities that exist here when you decide to do something.

A piece of advice for the road

Joel's advice to those considering moving to Åland is to be open-minded and curious.

– Dare to give of yourself, and you will get a lot back in return.
