Healthcare in Åland

Åland public health care services, Ålands hälso- och sjukvård (ÅHS), is a large hospital in miniature.

ÅHS is responsible for the entire public health care in Åland – from maternal care and pediatrics to various forms of specialized medical care and end-of-life care. ÅHS has 150 hospital beds.

The comprehensive services offered by ÅHS to the residents and visitors in Åland are characterized by a humane individual approach with focus on professional quality. Further, our co-operation with hospitals in Helsinki, Turku and Uppsala provides our clients and employees access to Nordic excellence in skills.

ÅHS has over 1,000 employees. The services are mainly concentrated in Mariehamn. These include:

  • health care centre
  • hospital
  • rehabilitation and geriatrics
  • dentistry
  • medical care clinics
  • psychiatric clinic

ÅHS is also represented in the countryside and in the archipelago.  There is a health care centre in Godby, and clinics in most Åland municipalities. Dental care is available in Mariehamn and Godby.

You will be charged a fee when you visit the doctor or nurse. If you fall ill, you should first telephone a healthcare centre or healthcare clinic. Healthcare clinics are available in most municipalities. They provide mother and child healthcare, as well as some other healthcare services.

Dentist

There is public and privat dental care in Åland. To see the dentist in Åland you will need a Finnish peronal identity code (see section on registration). Public dental care is available to children and youth (up until the year you turn 28).

Ambulance

Dial 112 in case of a serious accident or illness. If you are sick or injured and the healthcare centre or clinic is not open, contact the Emergency Room at the hospital in Mariehamn. It is open 24 hours.

Private healthcare services

There are several private healthcare and dental centers, physiotherapists and chiropractors in Åland.
